Ithaca, 20 March 08 -- A remarkable weekend of Cornell playoff action begins this afternoon with a 2pm (Pacific Time) tip-off in the first round of the NCAA men's basketball tournament, when Cornell takes on Stanford in Anaheim. Slate named the Big Red as one of ten "teams we hate" in the tournament, citing the school's chewing gum nickname and frequent references to Randy Wittman. John Henderson of the Denver Post, on the other hand, called Cornell one of five "faceless but fabulous" mid-majors that "could be darlings of [the] NCAA tournament." We're thinking the Post has a better grasp of the situation.

The game will air live on many CBS affiliates, including WTVH Syracuse, available on Ithaca's Time Warner Cable. For those whose CBS affiliate is stepping away from the tournament for local news at that hour, the game is also on CSTV. Live streaming video is available at no charge at NCAAsports.com and CBS.com. Cornell's radio coverage will not be available for live streaming through the Redcast subscription service.

Many Cornellians are gathering around the country to watch the game, in such spots as Jillian's in San Francisco, the Grand Slam Sports Bar in Washington, D.C., Blonde, Brunette and a Redhead in New York City, and Moakley House at the Cornell golf course in Ithaca.

If Cornell bests Stanford, they'll move on to face the winner of either number six seed Marquette or 11th seeded Kentucky in the second round.

Taking to the Ice

Up next is Cornell men's ice hockey, enjoying the late game in Friday's pair of semifinal games at the ECAC Championship Tournament at Albany's Times-Union Center. They'll face Harvard after a marathon, double-overtime upset win last Sunday night sent eighth-seeded Colgate to the tournament instead of first-seed Clarkson. Colgate will take on Princeton in the early match-up.

Cornell's 7pm game against the Crimson will be televised on the NHL Network and in Central New York on Time Warner Sports (channel 26 in Ithaca). Live video will also be available online via B2 Networks.

If Cornell advances on Friday, they'll play a 7pm championship game Saturday against the winner of Friday's Princeton Tigers vs Colgate Raiders matchup.

First time at the Dance

And closing out a weekend of Big Red athletic action will be the women's basketball team, in the NCAA tournament for the first time. They face first-seeded Connecticut in their first round game in Bridgeport on Sunday evening at 7. The game will be broadcast live on WVBR (locally and on wvbr.com) and will be televised on ESPN2.

The Big Red women learned they'd face the Huskies in Monday night's selection show, a day after trouncing Dartmouth in a Sunday afternoon game that decided which team would represent the Ivy League in the tournament.
