Cornell men fall to Stanford in NCAA first-round action

Ithaca, 20 March 08 -- The remarkable Big Red men's basketball season closes on a disappointing 77-53 loss to the Stanford Cardinal in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Stanford leapt out to an early lead, and led by more than double Cornell's score for much of the game, but the Big Red struggled to close the lead in the second half.

Stanford has now beaten Cornell in three out of four meetings; the last time they met was a 67-55 win for the Cardinal in December, 1994. The Ivy League champion Big Red finishes the season 22-6, with a perfect 14-0 Ivy record. Stanford goes on to face Marquette in round two.

Thursday's winner will stay in Anaheim for Saturday's second round, against the winner of Thursday's Marquette vs Kentucky match-up.

Cornell women advance to NCAA, crushing Dartmouth on the way

Ithaca, 16 March 08 -- The Big Red women's basketball squad joins the men on the dance floor following Sunday afternoon's crushing 64-47 victory over a stunned Dartmouth at Columbia University. The Ivy League used a two-tier playoff approach as a tiebreaker to choose which team would go on to the NCAA tournament. Harvard, Dartmouth, and Cornell had finished the regular season in a tie for the Ivy title. The women will find out tomorrow night who, and where, they'll play next.

Big Red advances in ECAC play on sweep at Union

Schenectady, 15 March 08 -- Cornell men's ice hockey advances to the ECAC Hockey tournament semifinal round with a sweep of Union College at Messa Rink. The Big Red is the only team to advance Saturday; all four road teams won on Saturday night, extending the other three series to a third game. Sunday night's games will determine who else plays in Albany next weekend, and what time the Cornell game will be. [UPDATE: A marathon double-overtime upset win in the last quarterfinal series ended Clarkson's season and sends Colgate to Albany for the ECAC tourney. Cornell will play Harvard in the first round on Friday evening.]
